Equip youth with essential knowledge and practical skills to promote safety and responsibility around firearms. This class is designed to foster understanding, respect, and caution when encountering firearms, whether in controlled environments like shooting ranges or unexpected situations.

Class Outline: 

1. Introduction to Firearm Safety Principles

  • Overview of the class objectives and importance of firearm safety.
  • Core safety rules:
    • Always treat every firearm as if it’s loaded.
    • Never point a firearm at anything you do not intend to shoot.
    • Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to fire.
    • Be aware of your target and what’s beyond it.
  • Discuss how firearms work in basic terms (e.g., identifying parts of a BB gun and air rifle).

2. What to Do if You Find a Firearm

  • Steps to follow if a youth finds a firearm in an unexpected location:
    1. Do not touch the firearm.
    2. Move to a safe distance.
    3. Notify a responsible adult immediately.
    4. Ensure no one else approaches or interacts with the firearm.

3. Handling and Familiarization with Non-Lethal Firearms

  • Hands-on demonstration: Introduction to BB guns and air rifles.
  • Proper handling techniques, including how to:
    • Safely carry and load these firearms.
    • Check to ensure the BB gun or air rifle is unloaded.
    • Safely store BB guns and air rifles when not in use.
  • Emphasis on the differences between these and more advanced firearms.

4. Shooting Range Activities

    • Shooting practice with BB guns and air rifles, focusing on:
